Strong mind, strong body - ultra running with a resilient mind

Mindset is Everything

Your mindset is arguably your most powerful asset. While physical training builds endurance, it’s your mental resilience that will carry you through the dark miles, which you will undoubtedly face at some point.

Motivation is a big factor in whether you push on or throw in the towel. Many people talk about this as their WHY. Knowing why you are doing what you are doing is hugely important. If you don’t know why you are pushing yourself in to the pain cave it will be harder to stay there.

Understanding intrinsic vs. extrinsic motivation is also key. Intrinsic motivation are things like personal growth, wanting to test your limits etc tend to be more sustainable and empowering. Extrinsic motivation, such as medals, social recognition, competition, can be powerful short-term fuel, but may falter when things get tough. The most mentally strong ultrarunners often balance both but rely heavily on deep internal reasons to keep moving forward.

That said there is one extrinsic motivator I have found to be very powerful one and that is doing the event for a cause, or for someone else. That might be dedicating the race or parts of the race to a loved one or raising money for a charity close to your heart.

Ultimately, your mindset determines how you respond when things don’t go to plan. How quickly you can overcome and get back on track. Working on your mindset along with building your physical ability will make you much more resilient and more likely to succeed.

💡 Pro Tip: During training work on visualisation. The more problems you can anticipate the less they’ll rattle you if they arrive.

Ultras are a journey into the unknown. It’s hard to know what you will feel like at mile 80, because you can’t run those distances in training, and there in lies the excitement and the adventure. Enter the event embracing this uncertainty with an open mind and a curiosity. Ultras are not controllable, so control the controllables that you can and be open and resilient to those you can’t.

🤔Final Thought: Ultra Success Comes From In The Moment Smart Choices
